Your perfume questions answered!

You spray perfume on a few times in the morning without thinking much about it. For some, a quick spritz is just about the smell, and some love the routine more than anything. If this is ringing bells, then you are in the right place! Because we are ready to show you the complete perfume experience. Join us in exploring what makes it so special and how you can get the most out of your fragrances. The world of perfume can raise a lot of hard to discover questions. For example, how is it possible that your favourite perfume smells completely different on a friend's skin? And why does one fragrance linger more on someone else's skin, but your own it seems to have faded in no time?

We have the answers! After asking you (via Instagram) to share your burning perfume questions, we have listed the most frequently asked questions and answered them.

"How long can you store perfume?"

That depends on how you store the perfume. Every package has the minimum shelf life indicated on it. Usually, this is 12 months. This year starts from the moment you open the bottle. Store your perfume in the right way, in doing so you can extend its life by 3 to 5 years. A simple check: smell if your perfume still smells good and has not changed colour.

"How does perfume 'stick' the longest?"

Do you want others to smell your perfume all day long? First of all, make sure your skin is well moisturised. Do this by smearing your body with (odourless) body lotion. Then spray perfume on the pulse points of your body. By spraying here, the scent remains longest. Your 'pulse points' are behind your ears, on your neck and the inside of your elbows and knees. Next, you should avoid the temptation to rub your wrists together. It looks cool, but this will destroy the scent molecules. Read more tips in this blog on how to make your perfume last!

"Why do you smell one perfume all day and another only for a few hours?"

How long you smell a perfume depends on several factors. First of all, it depends on the composition of the perfume. How intense are the scent molecules? And how is the fragrance constructed in terms of ingredients? In addition, it also depends on how you spray a perfume (see the previous question). Finally, it has to do with our perception of odours. Our nose is stimulated by a new smell. After a while, our nose gets used to this smell, so we perceive it less strongly. Explaining why you often don't smell your perfume after a few hours, but the people around you still smell it. Our nose is used to the fragrance because we smell it continuously. Someone else will still smell your perfume because they have only just been introduced to the 'new' scent.

"How is it that a perfume smells different for each person?"

Our skin is our largest organ and consists of several layers. The outer layer is always slightly acidic, so it can protect us from outside waste products. Every skin has a different pH value, also called acidity. This acidity affects the scent of the perfume. Because one skin has a higher acidity level than another, the same perfume can smell different on each skin.

"What fragrance notes does a perfume consist of?"

Every perfume consists of three layers: the top, the heart and the base. At the top of the composition, you will find the top notes. You can smell the top notes of perfume straight after applying. Top notes are usually citrus, aromatic and green. The heart of the perfume can be smelled up to 5 hours after spraying a perfume. Heart notes are often floral, spicy or fruity fragrance notes. What remains is the base of the perfume, usually consisting of heavier notes and are the longest smelling. Examples are woods, amber, musk, vanilla and patchouli. Here you can read more about the composition of the perfume.

"How do you "layer" perfumes?"

Simple: spray two or more perfumes on top of each other until you have created your signature scent. There are no rules within the world of perfume layering! Just be careful about mixing two perfumes that are both heavy. Also, spray the lighter perfume over the heavier ones. This way, the heavier notes create the base for your self-developed perfume creation. Want to read more about layering? Read how to create your signature perfume using layering here.
